Comparing books

We read two fantastic books by the same author and the same illustrator in class today.
We really enjoyed The Gruffalo's Child and The Smartest Giant in Town
both written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.
We used Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast the two books.

We put the things that they had in common into the middle of the two circles and we put the things that belonged in only one book into the piece of the circle that didn't overlap with another circle.
We even chose our favourite of the two books.
The Gruffalo's child was the more popular of the two books.
We love reading!

If teacher runs out of nice Christmas books she will borrow more at Ballybane Library.

Making CVC words

We really enjoyed writing CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words today.
When we finish a word, teacher checks it, we can wipe it out and take a new word.
We are learning to spell lots of words.

Visiting our school library

Today we went to visit our school library.  We enjoyed picking our own books.
We had time to read our books, and we chose ones to take home with us.
We are going to visit the library every week from now on.

Reading Braille

During our final Junior Achievement lesson this week we heard about how to read if you are blind.
Dane brought us in a medicine box with Braille writing on it.
Teacher found two other medicine boxes written in Braille.
We could feel the writing but it was too difficult for us to read.
Look out for Braille writing around you!

Rocket poems

We learned a great space poem
We all wrote our poem onto a rocket, put in a window to look out and a picture of ourselves in the rocket.
Then we hung our space poems onto a huge rocket which we have hanging outside our classroom for all to see.

Hedgehogs

They are so well done, we have to show you.

Loop games for reading

We play lots of loop games to help us with our reading.
Today we used the yellow CVC loop game with an a in the middle of each word.
We are getting really good at sounding out these words now.
Even easier for us is the loop game with the words we know from our readers.
We don't have to figure out these words at all because we know them all so well.

Pat Speight at the library

Today, we went with Ms Connolly's and Ms Cunningham's classes to Ballybane Library where we listened to a storyteller called Pat. Along with telling us some interesting and funny stories, Pat also showed us a few tricks! We had a great time.
Today we went to the Ballybane library to hear a story. We walked for miles and miles but it was worth it. The storyteller's name was Pat, he wore a hat and was very funny. We sang songs and he showed us how to make a pig out of the letters ewmwE.
